Supernatural: The Return of John Winchester (An Insomniac Review)

“DAD’S ON A HUNTING TRIP, AND HE HASN’T BEEN HOME IN A FEW DAYS.”

It was the epic quote made by Dean Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles to his little brother Sam, played by Jared Padalecki over a decade ago. I remember the pilot, airing back in ’05 on the then WB network. A lover of the macabre and well the supernatural, I couldn’t wait to watch this show about creepy stuff. I was already excited to find out that the cute actor from Smallville would star in his own show but never did I realize that this show would be anything like this. And alas 14 years later, here I am.

Earlier today, after scrolling on Instagram, I see a post from Jensen Ackles. It was the cover to Entertainment Weekly, highlighting Supernatural’s upcoming 300th episode. Well the first slide was of him looking handsome as ever on the cover and so of course I double tapped… However nothing would prepare me for the next photo slide!

Yep that was me at work, looking at my phone, so excited, ready to jump and scream. I think I almost tinkled myself… no, not really… YUCK …OK, maybe a little. Anyway I thought I was happy to about the previously aired Scooby-Doo crossover but it was nothing like this…  this made my day! And so I looked at the tags, among them Jeffrey Dean Morgan, that’s right, Papa John Winchester. Who we haven’t seen since the end of season 2, in which the scene (where he escapes hell) was pre-filmed in advance and edited with blue screen.

At the time and in the years since then, the actor has been quite busy, which made any other appearances quite virtually impossible. Still, before I even looked at the tags, I see he’d posted the same magazine cover. I’d been a fan follower of his and so I popped over to his page to see if my eyes were deceiving me. And nope there it was!

I don’t think my heart was prepared to skip beats today until Zumba class but alas, it did. I went online to the EW site and saw the hype was true, this would be the father of all reunions.

Although the character John has been featured in the show as his younger self, us fans have been begging and pleading for Morgan’s return.

We had been teased and taunted over the years but it wasn’t until the actor revealed that he would be open to the idea of returning…or so to speak. Since then I was on the lookout at tweets and Instagram posts. For years, the Supernatural cast has trolled one another and poked fun, the most popular, being the post with the infamous spiked bat, Lucille from the Walking Dead series in which Morgan was casted as Negan.

Yet this was the news I’d been waiting a decade for. I think I’m about as excited as Mary Winchester is to see her beloved husband.

I tried to stay away from hyper-posts, spoilers and fan theories. And so I opted to post a quick blog before reading the EW online article…so hopefully my subscription will be waiting for me when I get home. Until then you (and I) are going to have to wait until 300th episode of Supernatural, which airs February 7th.  Shoot!! That reminds me I need to reschedule my personal training appointment that day. 🤔

Supernatural season 14 returns on the CW on Thursday, January 17th.

Til Later Kiddies,

Shalom
